Things happen for a reason, at least that’s what people have been telling me all my life. I never really believed in it, the whole fate thing. I always thought things happened because of the way circumstances panned out, because of choices we made, good or bad. I used to believe that anyway, until my life changed, not because of choices I made, but the ones life made for me.

This is the story of a sixteen year old girl who only wants to spend the summer with her best friend, catching sun, finding romance and maybe a little adventure. simple right? until the adventure finds her. family secrets coming to light, forcing to choose responsibility over love, overthrowing an evil dictator all while trying to keep a 4.0 grade point average are only some of the obstacles facing Mariela Corte-Real.
