Luis Madrigal loved maintaining an organized, structured life. He was fully prepared to ask Red to Castlecoming with a grand gesture in the middle of the cafeteria. However, after a big mix up, instead of asking Red, his massive public invitation accidentally lands squarely on Max Hatter, who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. With the entire student body watching, a split second mistake leaves both boys in the spotlight.

To save face from ultimate public embarrassment, Max plays along and says yes to the accidental proposal. The two boys quickly strike a deal to attend the dance "just as friends" to keep up appearances for the school. However, surviving the week before Castlecoming means surviving coordinated suit fittings, mandatory ballroom lessons, and the relentless school gossip. As the night of the dance finally arrives, keeping up appearances becomes the least of their worries when fake feelings turn a little too real.
