How I would rewrite the ending of Banana Fish, (specifically the manga), and how I believe the characters would act if given the chance to meet again.
It had been 6 months since Eiji left America behind, but his memories and experiences were still ingrained in him. He hadn't fully healed from his gun shot wound, he was still weakened and a bit sore. The weight of leaving it behind was crushing him. The weight of leaving Ash.
He knew Ash had his reasons for not seeing him off at the airport. Ash thought Eiji would be better off never being in his life again. But was that really true? Despite the safety and comfort of Japan, Eiji didn't feel "better off", he felt restless. He had no idea how Ash was doing, if he himself was safe and happy.
When he got the call Ash had been stabbed, he hadn't felt more worried in his life.
Which is why he and Ibé decided to go back to the US.
