Nathan West is a clumsy yet cheerful university student who always looks on the bright side of life. He's happier than ever now that he's dating Evelyn Ross, the girl of his dreams. But Evelyn is secretive about her past, and unsettling rumors around campus suggest she may have done something terrible. Nathan refuses to believe the gossip, even as his best friend, Jenna, insists dating Evelyn is the biggest mistake of his life.

Even so, Nathan's love for Evelyn runs too deep for him to let idle rumors outweigh the affection she has always shown him, believing that the stories surrounding her could just as easily prove false.

But during what was supposed to be a brief summer getaway to a forest renowned for its enchanting lake with his group of friends, everything changes for both Nathan and Evelyn. Their peaceful escape is shattered when the mafia arrives, hunting for Evelyn's head. As chaos unfolds and Nathan becomes convinced that neither of them will survive the nightmare, he watches in horror as his girlfriend stands before him... soaked from head to toe in blood, resembling a bloodthirsty monster rather than the woman he thought he knew.

From that moment onward, Nathan is given countless opportunities to understand the invisible leash wrapped tightly around his neck by the sweet nightmare he had fallen so deeply in love with. And he should have taken the warning life offered him far more seriously the day Evelyn calmly threatened to break his ankle if he ever attempted to run away from her again.
