Sixteen-year-old Sambor Sokolnicki was born with frost-white hair and a reflex that can freeze time - a gift he doesn't yet understand. Raised under his veteran father's iron hand, he was destined to become the Commonwealth's finest blade, in an age that forgot its guardians.

Everything changes when a journal in the family armory leads him to a cave that reeks of lilac and gooseberries, where a power older than the Crown sleeps beneath a black monolith. Forced into flight from home, Sambor becomes an outlaw, riding south for Kraków with a star-forged sabre and an archer from the Wild Fields.

Something dormant in his blood is coveted by the mightiest forces alive, while from Wawel's shadow a Gray Eminence counts the days until it wakes.
