It wasn't because they never saw each other. They did, more often than either of them cared to admit. They liked the same coffee shops, went to the same restaurants, and somehow always ended up at the same events around the city. Every now and then, Juju would glance up and catch Asani across the room. Sometimes Asani noticed too, their eyes meeting for a split second before one of them looked away. Neither one ever made the first move. It had become an unspoken routine. See each other. Pretend they didn't. Life had kept moving, whether they wanted it to or not. Juju had seen Asani back on campus a few months ago, juggling classes again after taking time away from school. She looked older, more put together, carrying herself with the quiet confidence that only came from surviving things people never knew about.
