"You're Fire Nation," Zuko said, disbelief creeping into his voice.
Kaia glanced at the flames still flickering around her hand before extinguishing them.
"You don't say."
"Then why are you protecting the Avatar?"
She tilted her head.
"Maybe because someone has to."

Kaia was born in the Fire Nation to a Fire Nation father and a Southern Water Tribe mother, inheriting the impossible ability to bend both fire and water. To protect her from becoming a target, her parents kept her waterbending a closely guarded secret, allowing her to practice it only within the safety of their home. When Kaia was eleven, her mother was taken away by Fire Nation soldiers, forcing her father to send her into hiding with nothing but her mother's Water Tribe necklace and the hope that she would find her mother's people.
After a long and dangerous journey across the sea, Kaia arrived at the Southern Water Tribe, where she struggled to earn the trust of people who had every reason to fear anyone from the Fire Nation. Through kindness, courage, and her determination to protect the village, she became the first Fire Nation-born firebender they truly accepted. Soon after, while fishing with Katara and Sokka, Kaia helped discover a mysterious iceberg-and the young Air Nomad frozen inside, whose awakening would change the fate of the world.
