Elliott's Mirage

There is no sun above the circus.

No one remembers whether there ever was.

The performances begin. They end. The audience applauds. The performers bow. Behind the curtains, the ropes are checked, the costumes are mended, and the same names are spoken in the same order. It has always been this way. It is easier not to ask how long "always" has lasted.

The Sideshow Assistant does not perform beneath the spotlight. He prepares the stage, carries the props, smooths the sawdust, and makes certain everything continues exactly as it should. He knows the circus is wrong. He has known for longer than he can remember. Knowing has long since stopped changing anything.

Then, among the audience, there is simply... a man.

Not a hero. Not a mystery. Just an ordinary person who smiles too easily, thanks people out of habit, and speaks to the Assistant as though he were simply another worker at the end of a long shift.

It is an unbearably normal kindness. It is normal.

Within a circus where every role consumes the person beneath it, where memory survives only in broken fragments, and where surrender is mistaken for routine, even the smallest human connection begins to feel impossible.

Some tragedies are born from monsters.

Others begin with someone asking,

"Have you eaten yet?"
