Nautilus

The ocean doesn't always kill you.

Sometimes, it teaches you how to survive inside it.

When Nautilus was a child, he dove into the sea to save a life. He kept diving back in-for strangers, for desperate souls, for anyone sinking beneath the waves-until the ocean offered him a choice: drown... or become something that could survive forever.

He grew gills.

Years later, he's no longer human. He tends kelp gardens, gathers shells, and pulls drowning people back toward the surface before disappearing into the deep once more. Everyone calls him a guardian. A miracle. A hero.

No one asks who rescues the one who never comes ashore.

The salt never stops stinging.

Then a girl begins visiting the old dock-not to be saved, but simply to talk. She never steps into the water. She sits above it, telling him about the world he left behind, never asking him to sacrifice anything, never expecting him to stay beneath the waves for her sake.

For the first time in years, Nautilus wants something for himself.

He wants to breathe air again.

But healing isn't as simple as returning to shore. Lungs don't grow back without pain. Letting go of the life that kept you alive can feel more terrifying than the suffering you already know. And when your entire identity was built on saving everyone else, choosing yourself can feel like the cruelest thing you've ever done.

A fantasy about surviving what should have destroyed you, learning that coping isn't the same as living, and discovering that sometimes the hardest person to save... is yourself.
