The first thing you learn about the dark is that it's empty. The second thing you learn is that it's lying.

In the old kingdoms, children are taught to fear beasts, warlords, the things that howl beyond the walls. Smart men fear the quiet. Because quiet means the night has already chosen its king, and he is walking. They call him Drakus Shadowborne, the Umbral Sovereign. Not a man. Not a myth. A verdict. Bandit lords slit their own throats when his name crosses the border. Necromancers burn their books and pray to gods they don't believe in. Why? Because Drakus Shadowborne doesn't hunt. He is the dark behind you. You've been haunted since birth. You just met him now.

He was not forged in light and made to fall. He crawled out of the dark already broken, and decided to make it mean something. The scales he wears were not granted by any god. He grew them. Each one a scar, each one a night he chose to bleed for someone weaker. The mask is not for anonymity. It's because mortals break looking at what guilt made. Red eyes do not glow with borrowed power. They are the reflection of every fire he's walked through to drag a child out the other side. The guilty call him the end. The innocent call him Uncle Dusk, and leave black feathers on their doorsteps. No one touches those houses. Ever.

To his enemies, Drakus Shadowborne means one thing: dusk is all the mercy you get. He does not offer trial. He does not offer chains. He offers the choice to stop breathing before Nightfall - his sword - drinks. And Nightfall is always thirsty. Its edge whispers "Ego Sum Finis". I Am The End. Kings have emptied their treasuries to hire armies against him. The armies take the gold, then use it to buy graves in advance. Because the Sovereign does not wage war. He collects. And the night's kingdom is already his.
