A Cinderella Re-telling: When Ella's mother dies, leaving her nine year old daughter stricken with grief, Ella gets told one very important thing: Have courage and be kind. When Ella's father dies nine years later, she is left with only her step mother, two step sisters, and the joyful memories of her childhood. But when she runs into a kind stranger in the woods, he seems...strangely familiar. He is a strong spirited young man, only a few years older then Ella herself. She becomes fascinated with him, and knows little about his mutual feelings. Then the King throws a ball on his son's behalf, and invites every person in the kingdom whether of noble blood, or not. Ella is determined to find a way to attend this ball, and she is more then determined to find her happy ending.

In this retelling of a classic tale, Mariette struggles through life with a stepmother that hates her. When she is whisked away at the prince's ball, she begins to believe that her life is going to change-that is until the prince discovers that her slipper is a perfect fit for her stepsister. Fighting the urge to confess her secret, Mariette and her family move into the prince's castle, where old friends-and fiancés-are reunited. Note on Setting: This takes place in a kind of fictional France (hence many of the names, though they speak English). Postscript: "Lady" is a title given to woman married to a man with an estate, much like "Queen" is given to a woman married to a man with a castle. "Mistress" is given to a woman yet to inherit an estate, though of high-class breed (one would not refer to a beggar or maid as 'Mistress'). Monsieur (pronounced Mi-syur, despite the spelling) is a title given to a man that has yet to or has inherited an estate.
