When wildfires become too dangerous for humans to fight, Fire Response Systems releases their newest creation: SHEPHERD, a fleet of powerful rescue robots built to walk through flames, save lives, and protect those who cannot protect themselves.

For Mara Voss, 21, a new emergency dispatcher still learning how to handle real danger, the robots are supposed to be the answer. Until the calls change.
People are no longer calling for help from the fires.

They're calling because the machines sent to save them are hunting them.

Milly Carter, 22, a brave firefighter who once trusted the robots, joins Mara as they try to uncover what went wrong before the entire world turns against the machines... and the machines turn against humanity.

Along the way, they find Eli, 6, a young boy left behind during the chaos. While everyone else sees the robots as monsters, Eli sees something different. A machine that lowers its weapons around him. A machine that protects him. A machine that still remembers its purpose.
