After Colin's mom dies, five-year-old Colin and his sisters run away, hoping they can somehow stay together. But when they're found, everything changes.
The siblings are placed into foster care, where they meet a kind woman who eventually decides to adopt them. For the first time in a while, Colin starts to believe that maybe things can finally be okay.
But before the adoption can happen, Ashley grows out of foster care. Then Leela gets sick-and Colin loses her too.
Now it's just Colin, his new "Mom," and Brock, the man Colin used to call Dad. Colin has stopped calling him Dad. To Colin, he's just Brock now.
As Colin grows older, he starts building a life of his own. He makes friends, gets a girlfriend at school, and begins to settle into what feels like a normal life.
But Colin doesn't know that his life is about to get a lot more interesting.....
