Do you remember when the sun turned black?
Nadine grew up in East London in a childhood where love and chaos lived side by side. At the centre of it was her mum, Juliet: funny, fiercely loving, completely accepting, occasionally impossible, and the person Nadine would choose over and over again.
But there were parts of their world that a child could never fully understand, and things that had become ordinary long before Nadine was old enough to realise they weren't.
Black Sunshine is a memoir about childhood, family, identity, love, violence, survival, grief and the strange things our minds choose to remember. It's about laughing in places where laughter probably shouldn't exist, loving people who sometimes hurt us, and becoming very good at surviving long before understanding what survival might eventually cost.
This isn't a story about heroes and villains. It's about people: complicated, flawed, funny, loving and sometimes capable of causing enormous damage.
Some lives are not entirely light or entirely dark. Sometimes both exist at once.
This is Black Sunshine.
