Kdysi byl obávaným hradním pánem - krutým, chamtivým a nelítostným vládcem, jehož jméno nahánělo hrůzu široko daleko. Když však cítil, že se blíží smrt, zachvátil ho strach z Božího soudu. Ve snaze vykoupit svou duši odkázal svou tvrz církvi pod jedinou podmínkou: aby se za něj kněží navěky modlili.
Slib byl brzy porušen. Tvrz přešla do rukou světských pánů a na modlitby za zemřelého se zapomnělo.
Od té chvíle se nad tvrzí vznáší kletba.
V hradní kapli visí starobylý portrét bývalého pána. Ve dne je jen připomínkou dávné minulosti. Jakmile však odbije půlnoc, obraz zůstává prázdný. Přízrak mrtvého rytíře opouští své plátno a vydává se temnými chodbami hledat další oběť.
Každý nový majitel tvrze umírá dříve, než se dožije čtyřicátých narozenin. V noci se ozývají kroky v prázdných sálech, dveře se samy otevírají a v kapli se každého rána znovu objevuje postava hradního pána, jako by se nikdy nepohnula.
Když tvrz získá další šlechtic, považuje pověsti za pouhé strašení. Brzy však pochopí, že legenda je skutečná. Má jen několik let na to, aby odhalil pravdu o porušeném slibu a nalezl způsob, jak vysvobodit duši mrtvého pána. Jinak se stane další obětí přízraku, který už po staletí opouští svůj obraz, aby dokončil svou pomstu.
