As a result of a bone-chilling encounter that shatters their safe space, best friends Zaliyah and Anaïs slowly lose their easy communication. The wedge digs deeper between them, yet they must continue paying rent with shriveling bank accounts and no family support, forcing them to take diverging paths for survival.

Zaliyah leaves her old salon to get hired at Mo's, an unassuming, thriving, community bookstore-salon just down the street. While Zaliyah rebuilds her natural hair clientele, Anaïs is pulled further and further away from their friendship for reasons not communicated, leaving her no choice but to reassess Mo's as a place for friendship.

Even though it's her job, the salon becomes a place where she can change, tinkering with her old ideas of friendship, community, and love, until they become completely new frameworks for living. No one pressures her to become anyone else-Zaliyah simply nurtures something new, and suddenly, the world is so much bigger, so much more beautiful, and so much more intertwined than the bubble she stayed in with Anaïs.

She wishes she could pull her best friend to the other side, but she is stuck elsewhere.
