Every 2 years, two recruits are chosen from the Underline to become The Veiled-an elite pair trained to become the most skilled and dangerous operatives the Underline has ever produced.

The Underline is an underground society hidden beneath the ordinary world, known as the Above. Families live there. Children are raised there. Everyone is trained in a specialized field, and most Underliners have never known anything beyond the world beneath them.

Within the Underline, the Veiled are considered the highest honor an Underliner can achieve.

Every two years, two recruits are selected and paired together. For the next two years, they undergo specialized training, psychological testing, and simulated missions designed to push them beyond the limits of ordinary Underliners. When they turn twenty, they will finally be allowed to choose their permanent path within the Underline.

But this cycle is different.

Because one of the Veiled recruits was never supposed to be there.

She wasn't raised in the Underline.

She wasn't trained for it.

She doesn't even remember where she came from.
