Eighteen-year-old David Willoughby has never given much thought to what he wants out of life. Raised by his grandparents on a remote homestead in the Alaskan wilderness, he has always been more concerned with what needs to be done-tending the animals, helping around the homestead, and making himself useful wherever he can.

But when a fishing trip to a nearby lake goes horribly wrong, David awakens to a life that isn't his own. Stranded among a tribe of therians, he finds himself in the place of someone they already know-and someone whose reputation has left behind more than a few fractured relationships.

With little more than the survival skills his grandparents taught him, David must learn to navigate an unfamiliar world while repairing bonds he never broke and living with the consequences of a past he never lived. Yet the farther he travels from the life he once knew, the harder it becomes to ignore the question that has followed him all along:
