The Fourth Gate

Maria is an angelic warrior from the Order of the Fourth Gate, sent to Michael for an assignment she doesn't fully remember. Protect him. Guide him through what he cannot see. Complete the assignment. Leave.

Those are the terms.

And Maria has rules of her own.

She can intervene. She can protect. She can stand between worlds when necessary. But she cannot attach. She cannot stay because she wants to.

And above all-

Rule Three: To desire is unpermitted.

Then thirteen-year-old Clara Vale walks onto the set of the film Michael is making with John Landis and looks at Maria like she's been waiting years for her to come back.

Clara remembers Maria.

Maria doesn't remember Clara.

Worse, Clara remembers that Maria died.

When Michael finds a hidden Fourth Gate file, four names are sitting inside it: Maria. Clara. Soraya Vale. Elias Venn. Maria marked Active. Clara a dormant link. Elias, the Gate Cartographer. And Soraya-a Custodial Witness who seems to know exactly who Maria was before her memory disappeared, and exactly what could happen if she becomes that woman again.

Meanwhile, John thinks he's simply making a film.

He doesn't realize the story he's building is beginning to mirror Maria's forgotten life-or that the woman he wants to place in front of his camera is being written as everything the Fourth Gate taught her never to become: emotional, wanting, devoted, in love.

And Michael notices.

The more he learns about Maria's rules, the less interested he becomes in helping her obey them.

Maria was sent to teach Michael about the unseen.

Michael quietly gives himself a counter-mission:

break every rule that taught Maria not to be human.

Teach her love. Desire. Attachment. Pleasure. Choice. What it means to stay because she wants to. What it feels like to be wanted for nothing she can provide.
