Two years after Alexandra's death, Spencer Dutton has learned how to survive without her.

Living is another matter.

Back at Yellowstone, he has reduced his world to the things he knows how to protect: his family, the ranch, and the young son Alexandra left behind. War taught him how to kill. Africa taught him how quickly the world can take what you love. Grief taught him not to ask life for anything twice.

Then Josephine Adelheart rides onto the Yellowstone.

She arrives with her father, a palomino mare, and enough belongings to suggest she has no intention of going back where she came from.

Josephine is beautiful, stubborn, capable on horseback, and far too accustomed to watching a man's hands when his voice rises. She has come west looking for work-not rescue-and whatever happened before Montana is something she intends to keep behind her.

Yellowstone has other ideas.

Little John takes to her first.

The rest happens so quietly Spencer almost fails to notice it.

Her laughter begins appearing in rooms that have been silent too long. Her things find places beside theirs. She argues with him, steals his coffee, works beside his family, and treats his son's memories of a mother he barely knew as something precious instead of something painful.

Josephine never tries to replace Alexandra.

Perhaps that is what makes her so dangerous.

Because grief is easier when the world stays empty.

And Spencer Dutton has spent two years making certain it does.

But winter cannot bargain with spring.

It can only hold it back for so long.
