Despite the best efforts of their families to turn their love story into a Shakespearean tragedy, Sarah and Emily remained blissfully unbothered.
While Sarah's mum insisted on sending her an endless supply of "How to Fix Your Daughter" pamphlets, Emily's dad was busy trying to convince her that "just one date with a nice young man" could change everything.
The couple often joked that they should start a support group: "Loving Against the Odds - Snacks Provided."
Over dinner, they'd roll their eyes at the latest family drama, turning the tension into a game of who could come up with the most outrageous 'straight' scenario.
