Madeline Walsh, is loud in the way some people are when silence makes them uncomfortable. She laughs too hard, and never seems to run out of something to say. She has a habit of turning everything into a joke before anyone else gets the chance to take her seriously. To everyone around her, Madeline is confident - almost painfully so.

But confidence and certainty aren't the same thing. Beneath all the noise, Madeline has spent years quietly convincing herself that she isn't the kind of girl people stay for. She can flirt, she can make people laugh, she can walk into a room like she owns it, but the idea of someone genuinely loving her feels almost impossible. So when love starts looking at her, she doesn't know whether to believe it.

Harrison Carter has never really had to wonder whether people like him. He's handsome, athletic and one of the best rugby players in the school, the kind of person whose name seems to come up in every conversation. He's confident on the field and surrounded by friends, always laughing.
