Growing up, Lan Wangji imagined himself as Wei Ying's Omega. Wei Ying, loud, reckless, rushing head first to save others, Wei Ying was destined to be an alpha and Lan Wangji would be his. When Lan Wangji turned twenty, he disappeared. Wei Ying thought it strange. No one knew where he went or why. Wei Ying shrugged and hid the lone tear behind raucous laughter. Five months later, Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng are kidnapped on their way from school. Wei Ying risks his life to get Jiang Cheng out and is captured. While Jiang Cheng tries to get help, the kidnappers, enemies of the Jiangs, dose Wei Ying with chemicals meant to induce an omega presentation. Wei Ying goes into heat but the plan backfires on the kidnappers. In desperation, Wei Ying channels his fear into an attack that leaves Wen Chao with a permanent scar. Then Wei Ying runs away.

Eight years later, Lan Wangji is tracking down the notorious Yilling Laozu known for human traficking and illegal weapon trade. Not knowing what to do with Lan Wangji, Xue Yang, the Laozu's right hand man, takes Lan Wangji hostage. When Lan Wangji is brought to their base, Wei Wuxian rushes over to Lan Wangji, unties him and scolds Xue Yang that this was no place for an omega.
