"I don't want to take the place of your faith," prem said quietly. "I don't want to be worshipped, and I don't want to be the centre of your world. I just..."
He paused, his eyes meeting hers.
"I want to be the person your heart chooses to come home to."
She swallowed, unable to find the right words.
He smiled faintly, almost as though he was embarrassed by how much of his heart he had just revealed.
"The way your heart belongs to your God, mine has found its belonging in you."
Her eyes widened slightly.
"And I think that's what I've been trying to call love all this time."
He stepped no closer, leaving the space between them untouched, but his voice grew softer.
"I love you in a way that feels less like wanting to have you and more like being grateful that you exist. I want to know your fears without making them feel like burdens. I want to hear your prayers, even the ones you don't say aloud. I want to stand beside you when life is kind to you, and when it isn't."
He let out a quiet breath.
"So no, I'm not asking you to become mine tonight."
His eyes held hers.
"I'm simply telling you that, somewhere between watching you pray and watching you smile, my heart made a choice."
A small, almost helpless smile touched his lips.
"And it chose you."
