Then, Now, Always

Bonnie Wheeler thought she was done with Lucas Chamberlain.

Years ago, they loved each other badly enough to ruin everything.

Now Bonnie has moved on. She has a house full of friends, a life that finally feels steady, and Kyler Grant-a boyfriend she genuinely loves.

Then Lucas transfers to her university.

Suddenly, he's everywhere. At parties. Around her friends. In places that used to feel entirely hers.

He's older now. Quieter. Harder to read.

And Bonnie hates how familiar he still feels.

Lucas still remembers things about her he shouldn't. Bonnie still knows when he's lying. Old jokes come back too easily. So do old arguments. Sometimes they can barely stand each other.

Sometimes they forget they're supposed to.

Bonnie knows their relationship ended for a reason. She knows the past should stay exactly where she left it. More importantly, she knows loving Kyler should make everything about Lucas simpler.

It doesn't.

Because the more Lucas becomes part of her life again, the harder it is to tell the difference between something unfinished and something that should have ended a long time ago.

And maybe moving on was never the same thing as letting go.

Some relationships end.

Some become grief.
