For seventeen-year-old Mika Reyes, those rules mean nothing until she accidentally discovers a black door standing between Rooms 316 and 318-a door she is certain wasn't there before.

Inside the room is a mystery that seems impossible to explain: an old photograph of a girl who looks exactly like Mika, a notebook written in her own handwriting, and messages warning her that she has opened the door before.
