"Shut up.", Reese's voice cracked. "All of you, shut up!" The room went dead silent for a second.
"I never liked this nonsense gift." Her laugh was brittle. "It made my life harder", she sounded like an empty jar. Like something that used to be full and was finally done pretending.
None of them had ever seen her like this. She's always been happy, calm and sweet. No one expected this bitter side to be underneath.
So nobody spoke.
"I think we should call it a day. Reese needs to rest", commander Elmwood cleared her throat. Her voice wavered. Not because she doesn't care. But because of fear. Fear that if Reese kept talking, she'd splinter. And Elmwood wouldn't know how to put her back together.
Lieutenant Nox stepped forward. He was about to reach for her hand. "I'll drive you-", but captain Evrard grabbed it first.
"You stay here and help them finish the case, Lieutenant." His hand closed over Reese's wrist. Gentle yet unmovable. His eyes didn't leave Reese. "I'll take her home."
It wasn't a threat. It was a wall being built. And he was the one holding the bricks.
