Irrevocably Uncertain

He was exactly the kind of man everyone tells you you're supposed to marry. He was kind. He was stable. He remembered my coffee order, wished my mom a happy birthday, and loved me completely.

But standing in front of the officiant in my white satin dress, I realized the one thing I could no longer pretend wasn't true: loving someone isn't the same thing as being in love with them. So, I whispered a breathless apology, watched his heart shatter, and walked back down the aisle.

The moment I stepped through the doors of City Hall, the suffocating weight disappeared. I was terrified, heartbroken, and utterly lost.

Now, my engagement ring is gone, my finger feels strangely bare, and my best friend is begging me not to run from one life straight into another. I need to learn how to be alone. I need to figure out who I am when nobody is waiting for me to choose them.

But as the silence between us fills with everything we never said, I'm realizing a terrifying distinction: I don't need him. I don't need anyone. But even when I'm happy alone... I still want him.
