Open Heart

Joey Helstead has always been known for being cold-hearted, emotionless, and impossible to read. A nurse by profession, she keeps everyone at arm's length and rarely lets anyone see what she is truly feeling. The only person who seems to understand her is Jack Abbott, her best friend and an attending physician at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

Joey arrives at the hospital expecting nothing more than a visit with Jack. But when a critically ill pregnant woman is rushed into the emergency department with severe bleeding and her baby's heart rate begins to drop, Joey finds herself pulled straight into the middle of the crisis.

With the emergency department short-staffed and time running out, Joey joins Jack and the rest of the team in a desperate fight to save two lives.

As the pressure inside the hospital continues to rise, Joey's carefully guarded emotions begin to surface. Jack knows there's more behind her cold exterior than she lets anyone see-but just how long can Joey keep everyone at a distance?

Surrounded by emergencies, difficult patients, exhausted staff, and the people who refuse to give up on her, Joey may discover that caring isn't always a weakness.
