Jamaica, 1794.

Goldie knows exactly how far she is allowed to go.

Beyond the cane fields lies a wilderness her people have been warned not to enter-a place of mountains, fugitives, and whispers. Yet it is there, at the boundary between the plantation and the forest, that Goldie encounters a man who should not be there.

His name is Jomar.

He is a fugitive who has learned how to disappear into the mountains. She is a young woman who has spent her entire life surviving the world that owns her.

They have no reason to trust one another.

They have even less reason to fall in love.

But as Jamaica edges toward war, the fragile world they have created together begins to unravel. Rumors spread through the plantations. People vanish into the hills. Soldiers arrive. And the distance between captivity and freedom becomes more dangerous to cross with every passing day.

Goldie begins dreaming of a lion standing beyond the cane.

Jomar refuses to tell her everything he knows about the mountains.

And somewhere beyond the fields, he is preparing for a future he refuses to describe.

Then the war comes.

And Goldie must make a choice that could cost her everything she has left.
