Trent Jaxson McKinnon and Kody Wayne Doolan are both nineteen, aimless, bored and completely fucking sick of ordinary life. Trent is a smart-mouthed Canadian hoser; Kody is a reckless Aussie bogan. Neither has a plan for the future. Neither expects much from life. Then, during a late-night steamy webchat, they discover Vondovar: A Universe Within, a mysterious medieval game buried on a dodgy website.
They download it. The game downloads them.
In an instant, they're ripped through the Veil and dumped into Vondovar: a vast, beautiful, completely insane world of blood magic, enchanted wilderness, monstrous creatures, impossible machines and an ancient kingdom ruled by a Queen for centuries. Here, technology runs on blood, the forests whisper, the dead don't always stay dead, the country is on the brink of civil war, and the nights are long and full of terrors.
Trent and Kody have no weapons, no training and absolutely no fucking idea what they're doing. They survive through raw nerve, ingenuity, charm, muscle, stupidity and sheer fucking luck. They'll fight monsters, outrun soldiers, piss off royalty, stumble into conspiracies and discover that the people who welcome them with open arms may be just as terrifying as the things hunting them in the dark.
Vondovar is a world of contradictions. Its greatest wonders conceal its darkest horrors. Luxury and brutality exist side by side. A friendly face can hide a terrible secret. Every miracle has a price.
They learn fast. They lie. They manipulate. They cheat. They fight dirty and then fight dirtier. What begins as survival hardens into instinct, then into something colder.
Their bodies break. Their minds start to fray. Morality becomes flexible, then optional, then irrelevant.
Worst of all, they begin to understand the truth: The game was never a game.
Something chose them.
Something has been watching.
And something has been waiting for them to arrive.
