'The sun is leaving its orbit, and everything is already falling apart.'

It's 1917, and President Woodrow Wilson has asked Congress to declare war on Germany following Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare and the sinking of the Lusitania. When Jack is conscripted into the war and ordered to train at Camp Fremont in California, the Dawson family must navigate taking him to the train station and beginning a life without him.

Rose, their children Josephine, Henry, and Arthur, Jack's sister Elodie, Elodie's girlfriend April, and their daughter Caroline all have each other to rely on. But with Jack gone, the family is left struggling to find its balance again, because no matter how many of them remain, his absence feels like the sun leaving its orbit.
