Loretta Townsend is a mixed-race woman from Trinidad, serving in the British ATS and counting down the days until her husband Archie is deployed to the front lines. When her fluency in German catches the attention of a shadowy intelligence agency, she is given a mission that will take her to the heart of enemy territory: infiltrate Berlin, gain the trust of a high-ranking Wehrmacht officer, and neutralize him.

The target is Oberst Anselm von Brenner, a man utterly committed to the Reich's cause. He is a man who has sent thousands of Allied soldiers to their deaths, a man who believes in the Reich with every fiber of his being. Loretta is prepared to hate him. What she is not prepared for is the slow and deeply conflicted connection that begins to form between them.
