The phone rang at exactly 3:17 a.m.
Not insistently. Not urgently. Just evenly, as if it had no idea that in a few seconds it would split a life into two parts.

The room was dark. Rain drifted lazily outside the window. The screen on her nightstand glowed.
An unknown number.
She rarely answered calls like that in the middle of the night.
