Dr. Jannsen Raia Hale, MD, PhD, has always known exactly where she stands.

At the top of her field. The highest ranking psychiatrist in her institution. A name associated with excellence and discipline. She knows how to listen without becoming attached, how to empathize without crossing a boundary, and how to handle even the most difficult patients without allowing their problems to become her own.

Dr. Hale has always been certain that she knows the difference between caring for someone and becoming responsible for them.

Until a girl named Aikaira Xyrhiz D'Ivoire walks into her office. Aikaira is not Dr. Hale's first difficult case. She isn't even the first psychiatrist's difficult case.
