In the heart of Brooklyn, inside a small apartment surrounded by concrete, sirens, laughter, and struggle, the Carter family is doing everything they can to hold on to each other.

Nia Carter is a single mother who has spent her entire life learning how to survive. At thirty-six, she works, worries, sacrifices, and prays that her children will have opportunities she never had. She may not have much, but she'll fight anyone who tries to take what she does have-her family.

Sixteen-year-old Amara Carter is determined to become something more. Smart, stubborn, and fiercely independent, she dreams of leaving the projects behind and building a life of her own. But growing up means discovering that dreams don't come without sacrifices, and sometimes the people you love can be the ones who make leaving the hardest.

Then there's eight-year-old Jaylen, the youngest Carter, who sees the world through innocent eyes. To him, his mother can fix anything and his big sister can do anything. But as he grows older, he's beginning to notice the things the adults try to hide.

Between broken elevators, neighborhood drama, school problems, family arguments, first loves, financial struggles, and moments of unexpected joy, the Carters discover that surviving isn't the same as living.
