Ruth(Annie as her parents and sister call her) is sixteen years old, living in the attic of an abandoned building in a small town outside of Amsterdam during the Holocaust. Her family is Jewish and was forced to leave Amsterdam in order to avoid going to the horrifying concentration camp. So, past three years, they have been in hiding. However, even through the close quarters of the small space that they are confined to, Ruth has a secret. She secretly spends her nights writing to her boyfriend back home in Amsterdam so that she can have her best friend deliver letters to and from him. Her plan seems to work just fine...but when it fails to, will Ruth's family stay together after all?
