Adrian Cole was supposed to fly home to his wife. Instead, after a reckless weekend in Miami and a marriage barely surviving couples therapy, the Wall Street broker turns off his phone, gets behind the wheel, and heads west. No destination. No explanation. Just the need to disappear.

Then he sees Eli Mercer walking alone along a country highway with a battered backpack and his feet trudging along pointed toward California. Adrian should keep driving. He doesn't.
