Mira Lovell is twenty-two, out of work, and very good with her hands. When a recruiter offers her passage to a mining colony on a frozen moon, she signs a five-year contract she doesn't read.

Copper-9 runs on worker drones, and Mira finds she likes them better than people. They don't keep score. They don't hold grudges. When you talk to them, they talk back. So she learns their names, and hangs stolen lights over her line, and rounds the repair estimates down to keep them off the reclamation cart.

The company has a word for that. It's on a form. There's a box for it.

Everything that happens to her afterward happens because somebody ticked it.
