In the oppressive, gilded salons of pre-revolutionary Paris, reputation is the only currency that matters. The Vicomte de Valmont rules the court through scandal and meticulous seduction, until he is eclipsed by a new predator: Franz Anton Mesmer.

Newly arrived and financially ruined after the collapse of his marriage, the enigmatic Austrian doctor uses his so-called "animal magnetism" to hypnotize and extort high-society women. Seeing his hunting grounds invaded, Valmont seals a perverse bet with the Marquise de Merteuil: infiltrate the charlatan's clinic and ruin him.

But beneath the heavy, low-light shadows of Mesmer's sanctuary, the power dynamic shatters. By dragging the restrained doctor into the underworld of French libertinage, Valmont awakens desires Mesmer had never dared explore.
