Sixteen-year-old Nico has spent his entire life pretending to be human.

There are twenty-six Letters scattered across Earth, each hidden with a guardian called a Cipher. They were sent to Earth as children after their home dimension was destroyed, and something has been hunting them ever since.
There is only one rule keeping Nico alive:
The Letters can only be killed in alphabetical order.
When Letter L dies, only M remains between Nico-Letter N-and the hunters moving down the Sequence.
Then Nico's carefully controlled life begins to unravel.
A new identity brings him to the isolated mountain town of Blackwood Creek, where pretending to be an ordinary high-school student becomes harder than surviving the wilderness. A girl named Tori notices far too much. A strange kid named Jonah is accidentally building equipment capable of detecting things humanity shouldn't know exist. And the powers Nico was supposed to develop years ago are finally beginning to wake.
His first Syntax could be the weapon that keeps him alive.
