They both got married at the age 17; but one day Kol's youngest brother died and it forced Esther to do a very dark spell turning all her children into original vampires. She didn't want to do it for Cadance but Kol fought multiple times since I was his wife; then finally she gave in and did the spell for me to... but there was a catch to this spell.
