Gia Whitmore has never told a lie. She has, however, become very good at letting people believe the wrong thing.

Returning to Mystic Falls at twenty-one is supposed to mean a teaching job, a home of her own, and finally opening the study her father left behind. She knows the house will be difficult. She expects considerably less trouble from the local history.

But the dead have been editing their own stories, and Gia's questions are attracting attention.

The things she has spent her life explaining away, the iron that burns, the wounds that heal, the words she cannot force out, belong to a history nobody taught her. Her father knew something about it. The vampires living among her neighbours want to know considerably more.

As her father's research draws her deeper into the supernatural life of Mystic Falls, Gia must decide whom to trust with what she discovers about her blood.
