In the dead of winter, three damaged people learn that 'the dead of winter' is not just an expression.  Dr. Yukie Kuwano, her lover Matthew Darrow and his teenage daughter Kari are going on vacation in Japan, and tentatively feeling their way toward becoming a family.

However, even as they start to bond, the ghosts of Yukie's past, both literal and figurative, threaten their fragile new ties.  Worst of all, atop Mount Hakkoda, the last stop on their trip, Yukie will learn the truth about herself: she is not entirely human, and snow is in her very blood...
