"The crowd cheered... The avian lunged hard. The man smoothly flipped his grip, blade facing him and slid the opening up the pike. He twisted. He caught the pike and yanked down hard. Down came the pike, avian attached. As the pike came out of his hands, the man slid the guard up and jabbed the avian in the face as he came down. He was out cold."
  
  An untimely pestilence has taken the good King Fortun from the throne and replaced his rule with anarchy as guilds of robbers and murders rise to power. The arch-priests search for a new heir to the throne but come up empty handed. Now, they will attempt to revive the late king seek his words of council in finding a suitable ruler. However, messing with matters of the dead never blow over well...

After a long and weary war, King Pike, to celebrate his victory, hosts a magnificent feast. But the revelry draws the attention of the evil goblin. And every night for the next twelve years, the goblin brings death to the castle of King Pike. Now Bear, the son of a great hero, has come to the aid of King Pike. He seeks to do battle with the goblin, to bring its evil to an end. But there are many evils in his world ... ("Bear and the Goblin of Castle Hartland" is a re-imagining in prose of the Beowulf poem.)
