Each chapter is from a different point of view of a character and their experiences with the fates.
One is able to meet with the fates their graduating year. This is called "the orientation". They can either decide to ask about their future/destiny or they can choose not to. But it's the only chance they will ever have. 
The fates don't come cheap, but money's not what they are looking for.
