It's a historical I know for sure and its completed. 
The main character is a girl that watches her parents get killed right in front of her while she hides behind a painting. Her uncle comes and finds her there. He takes her in cares for as his own he reaches her how to fight. She meets a friend of her uncle that's very powerful and feared by most he decides to ask for her hand in marriage. They get married and fall in love eventually. 
I know bits and pieces that can help but I do not know the name of the author. 
She has a cousin that's married to her new husbands best friend. He's also very good to his ppl and has a good relationship with his men.
I think at some point she finds some kittens off on the land that have been there to set her up she saves them and cares for them. I'm not
