"The Enchanted Dagger," a Compton Crook Award Finalist, is an epic fantasy filled with mystery and magic. It's suitable for Young Adults and Adults who like "The Hobbit" and similar books. Back cover blurb:
      14-year old Beck Conleth is living a quiet life in the seaside town of Queen's Weather when his grandmother sends him on a journey to Ulfwood to retrieve his father's bones and a family dagger. After reaching Ulfwood, Beck discovers the blade is magical, and that it answers only to him. Soon the enchanted dagger and its owner attract the attention of dark mages, goblins, and worse. Helped on his journey home by Wisewomen, warriors, shape-changers, and the other good folk of Lifthrasir, Beck faces death, danger, and the theft of his blade.
     Accompanied by his best friend, Beck stows away on a ship, takes back his dagger, befriends a dragon, and escapes with a troop of thieves. After reaching a dock in West Arnora, the company heads for the fortress of Ravens Haunt. As Beck and his companions face a hideous Skullsoul and an army of ogerhunches, he realizes there is a developing confrontation between good and evil, and he and his enchanted dagger have a role to play.

In JOS I set the rogue and con-artist Harric against a foil of warriors in a land threatened by magic and civil war. Whenever possible I turn familiar tropes on their heads: instead of a handsome young Lancelot, I cast a broken-down ex-champion addicted to pain-killing herbs; instead of a dashing Squire Brian, the old knight reluctantly takes an ambitious young woman as squire. Similarly, I re-imagine the standard medieval milieu by infusing aspects of two of my favorite historical periods, Elizabethan England, and The American Frontier. Both eras boast a kind of nationalistic arrogance that borders on hubris, and a magnificent spirit of resourcefulness and re-invention that is fun to play with. SERIES The Jack of Souls is first in a series. I am posting parts of the sequel here now (The Knave of Souls), to help me refine the story.

A very real feeling vision in which the most feared creatures in the land of Everneau---the Enchantiss---are broken out of their longtime prison, Gloomhaven by none other than the Emperor of Everneau, Havel. Judging by the gravity and seriousness of the conversation between the Enchantiss and Emperor Havel that Nyx saw in her vision, Emperor Havel is recruiting the Enchantiss for something terrible, though Nyx wasn't able to hear anything in her vision. Nyx tells her tough grandmother about this vision and suddenly, she finds herself locked up in the house and her grandmother preparing for something that might never happen, scared for what is going to come. They have an argument and Nyx storms to her bedroom. When she comes down, her grandmother is being carried off by the strange looking creature from her vision---the Enchantiss. Now Nyx will have to find a way to rescue her grandmother from the clutches of the Enchantiss and Emperor Havel.
