"He toyed with the notion of being alive." ~ All was well for Hecate O'Marley, a young witch, until her mother finds a human skull in the family boathouse. Intrigued by marks on the skull that suggest the use of powerful magic, Hecate's mother urges her to use her Gift of Vitality to grant life to the skull's owner. Hecate does so reluctantly, only to please her coven. But as the results of Hecate's actions surface, she realizes she may have resurrected centuries old bad blood with her resurgence of Ezra Mansforth.

When seventeen year-old Guenevere Goode begins sleepwalking to the recently abandoned Zoloch estate across town and ending up in its creepy basement, she knows that something is up. Guen is Wiccan, and in line to become her town of Amnesty's next witch queen, along with her friends Yarra and Connie. The strange voice that Guen hears on the other side of the basement wall sounds young, female, and in distress. Who or what is it? Guen enlists the aid of her mother, Witch Queen Charity Goode, and the witch queen mothers of her friends Patience Smythe and Pandora Osbourne to help out. Also present is Guen's best friend Yarra Smythe. Guen and her friends are led by the entity in question not to the Zoloch estate, but to another house in town... a house that harbors a dark secret that will change the way things are done in Amnesty forever.
