Viola Bass was a mere sixteen years old and already she was smothered with strings. Connections. Memories she wanted to hide from.

Being named after a string instrument was unlucky. Being born into an extremely wealthy family and growing up on the Upper East Side of New York City was lucky.

Viola Bass had grown up listening to sleazy boys hit on her with stupid lines like "I bet I can strum your viola" with exaggerated winks. Viola would always blush shyly and glance the other way. She wasn't one to be in the spotlight, she was quiet and shy and that was her role in her gang of friends, no matter how much Blair Waldorf tried to make her into a bitch.

And then suddenly Viola's family leaves town. Viola is running from a death she has to face and leaving her cousin, friends and life behind.

But of course, Viola has to return. She can't hide forever. It would be a year later that she would return to NYC with her mother by her side, but no money in their pockets. Their father was "holidaying in the Hampton's" (as Viola's mother called it) and Viola was no longer the quiet, kind girl she once was.

The bitch Blair Waldorf had been trying to create was finally here, and her friends cannot be more delighted.

Except one. Nate Archibald. He wants the old Viola back, and he'll do anything to find out what she's hiding and why she's changed.

And Viola will do anything but admit just how much she's enjoying him pulling on her strings. And just how much she would let him "strum" her viola.
